Preventing a Hernia

Dr. Michael Gonzalez Ramos, General Surgeon with Baptist Health South Florida, advises not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, avoiding straining during bowel movements or urination, lifting objects with your knees and not your back, avoiding lifting weights.

After a surgery, Dr. Gonzalez recommends staying more active, not smoking and trying to sleep better. If it is a hiatal hernia, he advises moderating spicy food, coffee or any soda.
